Inside Janitronics’ Enhanced Life Science Training Center
Behind every medical breakthrough is a team of brilliant scientists and the facilities where the research and manufacturing took place. The team that cleans those facilities is just one small part of a lengthy journey from bench to bedside, but their contributions cannot be overstated. The accuracy, safety, and approval of any new or existing medicine is dependent on the cleanliness of those facilities.
The high-stakes nature of the work is what drives GMP Cleanroom Cleaning Operators to meet the most exacting conditions and deliver an audit-ready environment every single time. Life-saving medicine at the end of the journey is the reason so many of our workforce, from leaders to cleaners, are passionate about their work.
As our Senior Director of Quality and Compliance, Connie Correia, says, “I translate that motivation into ensuring our clients meet the highest regulatory and compliance standards. Operational excellence in GMP environments is not just about meeting requirements — it supports the scientific innovation and medical breakthroughs that make a real difference in people’s lives.”
A Rigorous GMP Cleaning Training Program
Connie’s perspective comes from her practical experience. As a key architect of Janitronics’ GMP training program, Connie has helped build a curriculum designed to ensure our cleaners understand and meet rigorous standards in every single cleaning.
Our goal is to consistently deliver superior cleaning and disinfecting under established cGMP regulations and client SOPs. We include a combination of instructor-led, web-based, and on-the-job training designed for real-time learning.
Training is completed annually to ensure the safety of our staff and compliance with industry regulatory standards. The curriculum is also enhanced by the hands-on training of cleanroom cleaning expert, Anne Marie Dixon-Heathman of Cleanroom Management Associates (CMA). With over 35 years in contamination control, Anne Marie has trained over 850,000 cleanroom technicians and managers in all areas of cleaning and operations.
Janitronics’ State-of-the-Art Life Science Training Center
In the fall of 2023, with the help of Anne Marie, we took our training program to the next level by opening our state-of-the-art Life Science Training Center. Originally, the Center was created to give our GMP cleaning teams real-world exposure before they enter the job site, but it quickly evolved into something more. The Center has demonstrated our commitment to the life sciences industry, influencing customer relationships and attracting potential clients as well.
The 1,500-square-foot facility combines both laboratory and classroom space, and is designed to give real-world experience with:
- logbooks
- gowning rooms and gowning materials
- technical procedures
- cleanroom equipment
The space includes mock cleanroom surfaces and equipment such as safety shower and eye wash station, mock HEPA filters, and more. With equipment demonstrations and live safety procedure walkthroughs, employees are able to learn best practices for maintaining life science and GMP standards.
The Center quickly became an invaluable and in-demand resource for Janitronics’ life science team. As our team has grown over the last few years, we’ve realized the need to grow the Center, too. This spring, the Life Science Training Center will debut a major upgrade.
The Upgraded Janitronics Life Science Training Center
The Training Center enhancement is a core component of Janitronics’ recently announced 4,700-square-foot addition to our Waltham Headquarters. When initially constructed, the Center was three separate rooms. With the upgrade, it will become one contiguous space that is more conducive to training than the original Center.
The Life Science Training Center upgrade will allow us to keep pace with training our new GMP Cleanroom Cleaning Operators as we expand. It enables our GMP cleaning team to have more real-world cleanroom cleaning experience. Previously, each of the rooms had examples of equipment, but now the space is much closer to a real-life client site. The physical upgrades include:
- Relocated lab desks and combined the Biosafety Cabinet (BSC) and Laminar Flow Hood into one area to make a mock GMP lab suite.
- Added a handwashing sink to the anteroom for enhanced contamination control.
- Created a chemical dilution room to a controlled not classified space (outside the GMP space).
This enhanced set-up will give GMP Cleanroom Cleaning Operators an even more realistic experience of a life science facility, before they even step foot into a client’s space.
Why the Enhanced Janitronics Training Center Matters for Life Science Clients
Providing our GMP cleaning teams with real-world experience is an important component of our training process at Janitronics. Our GMP Cleanroom Cleaning Operators get baseline experience of working in a controlled environment, enabling them to enter the client site better prepared than with classroom learning alone.
That hands-on foundation, combined with our other web-based and instructor-based training, is the real differentiator for our life science clients. This multi-faceted training program allows our cleaners to fully understand what it means to work in a space with groundbreaking research or life-saving medicine.
A Milestone on the Road to 50 Years of Janitronics
As we look to celebrate 50 years of Janitronics in 2027, the Waltham headquarters expansion is an important company milestone. It reflects our commitment to our people, clients, and community—and our passion for investing in infrastructure, training, and operational excellence.
The Life Science Training Center upgrade demonstrates our commitment to an industry that is crucial to New England and to making the world a healthier place. That commitment shows up in our client relationships, too. Our customized, hands-on approach has secured strong, lasting partnerships with clients in specialized industries such as pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical devices, semiconductors, and vivariums.
We invite you to experience our upgraded Life Science Training Center. See how it makes a difference in how our teams show up at the facilities where life-saving medicine is on its way to the patient.
