Janitronics Earns Green Seal® GS-42 Certification for Commercial Cleaning Services

Janitronics Building Services is pleased to announce that we have earned the Green Seal® GS-42 certification for commercial cleaning services. This is an important milestone in our longstanding commitment to environmentally responsible cleaning, employee safety, and healthier indoor environments.

The GS-42 Standard for Commercial and Institutional Cleaning Services establishes environmental and health requirements that extend beyond cleaning products. It evaluates the systems behind the delivery of commercial cleaning services, including building-specific procedures, environmentally preferable purchasing, employee training, equipment practices, recordkeeping, and communication. For Janitronics, achieving this certification is validation of the sustainable cleaning practices and management systems that we have built and strengthened over the last fifty years.

What Is Green Seal GS-42 Certification?

Green Seal is a global nonprofit organization that develops science-based standards intended to reduce environmental, health, and social impacts associated with products and services. The GS-42 standard for Commercial and Institutional Cleaning Services applies specifically to commercial cleaning services. It establishes requirements that support quality cleaning operations carried out by a trained workforce using effective green cleaning practices.

The standard addresses:

• building-specific operating procedures
• sustainable purchasing
• employee training
• tenant and client communication
• powered equipment
• waste and recycling practices
• and recordkeeping.

This broader approach is important because sustainable cleaning involves more than selecting environmentally preferable products. It requires an operating system that considers how cleaning is planned, performed, documented, communicated, measured, and continuously improved.

Expanding on a Longstanding Commitment to Green Cleaning

Sustainability has long been incorporated into our approach to commercial cleaning operations here at Janitronics. In addition to our Green Clean Program, which was designed and approved by Leonardo Academy, we also adhere to our Green Cleaning Policy. This policy establishes standards intended to reduce chemical exposure, improve indoor air quality, protect building materials, support worker safety, and minimize the environmental impact of cleaning operations.

Each year we document our commitment to sustainability in our annual Impact report. Our 2025 Impact Report included our plans for initiating the Green Seal Cleaning Certification process, with completion targeted for 2026.

Building-Specific Cleaning Plans, Team Training and Sustainable Products

In order to earn GS-42 certification, we had to demonstrate that responsible cleaning practices are embedded into our operations. The certification process provides independent verification that Janitronics’ commercial cleaning services meet the requirements of GS-42, including review of documented practices and on-site verification of implementation.

The certification evaluates the cleaning service as an integrated operation. This distinction reinforces an important principle of Janitronics’ approach: sustainable cleaning depends on people, products, processes, equipment, and disciplined implementation working together. Achieving Green Seal certification reflects the collective efforts of our crews, supervisors, managers, training resources, procurement teams, and operations leaders who put these standards into practice every day.

Site-specific planning and comprehensive training help our teams deliver consistent service while responding to the different occupancy patterns, operating requirements, traffic levels, and facility needs of each property.

Our green cleaning policies are designed to support both building occupants and cleaning professionals addressing:

• ergonomics
• equipment safety
• indoor air quality
• and the needs of vulnerable building occupants

As noted in the Impact Report, 85% or more of our cleaning products and supplies met environmental criteria.

Our Green Cleaning Policy continues to guide product selection, sustainability, and occupant well-being. Our purchasing policies incorporate recognized environmental criteria such as Green Seal standards, UL EcoLogo standards, EPA Safer Choice, and other sustainability requirements for cleaning products, supplies, and equipment.

What Green Seal GS-42 Certification Means for Our Clients

• Independent verification. Green Seal certification provides third-party recognition that Janitronics’ certified commercial cleaning services meet the requirements of an established green cleaning standard.
• Building-specific implementation. Written plans translate broader operating standards into procedures tailored to the conditions and needs of each facility.

Continuing the Janitronics Standard of Service

For nearly 50 years, Janitronics has worked to make Greater Boston’s buildings cleaner, safer, and healthier. Our Green Clean Program, Green Cleaning Policy, sustainable procurement practices, and ongoing investments in employee training have established a strong foundation for environmentally responsible building services.  The recent Green Seal GS-42 certification is the latest step in that progression.
